Puppy Love
A week ago yesterday we added a new member to our little family. We already had a little dog named Daisy, and now we have a second little dog named Lucy.
Lucy and Daisy are polar opposites. Daisy is a hyperactive fur ball of energy who loves to play with her toys and run in full speed circles on the carpet. Lucy, on the other hand, is the perfect lap dog. She’s totally mellow, and would rather curl up in someone’s lap than play fetch.
It’s been an interesting week watching them interact. Daisy doesn’t appreciate it when I give Lucy too much attention, and by too much attention I mean daring to glance in Lucy’s direction. Also, Daisy must know what Lucy is doing AT ALL TIMES. So, if Lucy is nicely sleeping in her bed, Daisy has to go over and check on her. Daisy must have some sort of internal clock because every ten minutes she goes over and looks at Lucy, then smells her, and then walks away. Sometimes there is doggy banter, whereby one dog goes over to the other and makes strange whimpering noises, and the other dog responds with even stranger whimpering noises. I’m sure they are saying things like “if you touch my toys I will take you down,” or “the toilet bowl water is mine, stay out”.
The strange thing is how easily Lucy fit in to our hearts. Perhaps it’s not strange at all, but she has quickly nudged her way in, not unlike the way she nudges her head into my armpit in the morning, and now I can’t imagine not having her. Daisy, however, is probably wistfully remembering her last days of single puppy-hood.
